Vase Hutschenreuther Selb, circa 1920

Lorenz Christian Friedrich Hutschenreuther (* 8 May 1817 in Hohenberg an der Eger; † 8 October 1886 in Würzburg) was the son of Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther, porcelain painter and founder of C. M. Hutschenreuther AG Hohenberg.

Lorenz Hutschenreuther learned the art of porcelain production in his father's factory and founded his own porcelain factory in Selb on 10 August 1857. The new factory was put into operation in March 1859. From 1870 onwards, the porcelain produced was stamped with the monogram "L. HR.".

After Lorenz Hutschenreuther left the company in 1877, the management of the company passed to his two sons Viktor and Eugen and his son-in-law Hans Pabst.

In 1902 the company was converted into a stock corporation and traded as Porzellanfabriken Lorenz Hutschenreuther AG Selb.

The Lorenz Hutschenreuther Art Department was founded in 1917. The history of this department and the newly opened luxury division was a success story. The artistic director was Professor Fritz Klee, head of the Royal Technical College in Selb.

As early as March 1918, painters were hired in the Art Department. In the 1920s, magnificent vases were created, some in a historicist style, some with Art Deco decoration. By the time the Hutschenreuther Art Department was closed due to the war in 1945, over 2,000 designs by more than 75 artists had been collected.
